It’s that time of year to celebrate the high school graduates of the class of 2021! It’s easy to compare our own senior year experiences to our own child’s experience and feel bad about the way the pandemic may have strained their final years of high school. However, we hope this blog will help encourage you to shift your perspective and celebrate the unique experiences the class of 2021 had. Here are 5 memorable ways to celebrate your high school graduate!

Ask & Listen to Your High School Graduate

The most important thing to do is respect your graduate’s wishes. Ask them how they would like to celebrate their graduation and listen to their response. Maybe they prefer family only, or a small get-together at home with friends, or possibly nothing at all. As parents, we have to understand that we’re holding on to their “last days” of high school and precious moments, but they’re eager for independence.

Go All Out With the Celebratory Signage

It’s time for a shopping trip to the home improvement store to pick up some yard signs! Make time for an extra trip to the craft store to pick up things like markers, glitter glue, pompoms, streamers, and stencils. You can have fun with the family creating the signs and place them in your front yard for people to see as they drive by. Want to celebrate in a REALLY big way? Rent a billboard! You may specifically call out your graduate and celebrate the entire class of 2021.

Plan a Drive-By Parade for Your High School Graduate

Invite friends, family, and fellow students to drive through the neighborhood to celebrate graduation! This allows for each household to maintain social distancing, yet still, come together to celebrate. Use car-safe paint to decorate your vehicle or place posters in the back passenger windows. Have your graduate sit out on the lawn to say hello and wave at all their guests as they drive by!

Create an At-Home Drive-In Theater

If your graduate is looking to do something smaller and more intimate, create an at-home drive-in theater! A closed garage door makes a great backdrop for a projection screen. Ask your graduate what their favorite movie is to play at your own drive-in. You can get really creative with invitations and make custom movie tickets to send to guests. Put together a quick photo slideshow to kick off the night and highlight all the memories they made during their high school experience!

Live Stream the Graduation Party

If out-of-town family or other guests can’t attend the graduation party, you may consider live streaming it! An easy way to do this is to create a private group on Facebook and only invite people you’d like to be able to view the live stream. Once the graduation party starts, you can use your phone or laptop camera to capture all the action and stream directly to Facebook!
